Grow Your Own Digital Accessibility Process

An hour-long talk, created for Code PaLOUsa 2019.

Abstract

Roughly 1 in 5 people around the world live with a disability, and legal actions against inaccessible websites are becoming more and more common. Unless you work for or with a government, though, it’s unlikely that your organization thinks about accessibility as much as it should. Oftentimes, team members don’t know the basics of building technology for people with disabilities, or if they do, there’s not usually a structure in place to empower them to use those skills. In this talk, I’ll discuss how you can begin an accessibility movement at your organization, including how to educate others, build empathy, and create a structured process.
